A Riddle

Picture taken from http://www.starburstmagazine.com/images/april2012/bitterbluebookreview.jpg, courtesy of The Internet. It depicts Bitterblue, the subject of this poem, which is based upon Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore, which the above quote from the Romantic Times is praising.
This poem is from the second of the two poetry collections that I have written for school, and is based upon Kristin Cashore's marvelous book Bitterblue. Everyone, go read Bitterblue! Even if you haven't read the other two books in the series, it stands well on its own! Though, actually, I would suggest reading the other books in the series, mainly because they're amazing books, but also so you can get that feeling of satisfaction when beloved characters from those books end up appearing in this one.

I don't think I need to warn of any spoilers, as this one is just sort of a teaser-type thing for the book. And no, I am not getting paid to endorse this work of literature.  :)

A Riddle
(Stories, Cyphers, Secrets, and Lies)

Stories, cyphers, secrets and lies;
The young queen walks through her own streets in disguise.
Searching for souls that her kingdom can save,
Searching for memories trapped in the grave.

Bones in the river and bones beneath skin,
Cutting and stitching up lives from within.
No one around you is able to trust.
Run away, run away from what you must.

Stories, cyphers, secrets and lies;
The young queen must face defeat, yet still she tries.

Warn all the truth-seekers that they must flee,
First they must hide before they can be free.
Hands that can heal you are hands that can bruise.
To love or stay silent? It's your path to choose.

Stories, cyphers, secrets and lies;
The fairy tales live on, but what is true dies.

To look to the future, examine the past.
Though the liar may be dead, all his lies can last.
Deeper and deeper, the dark record shows
The world is far larger than anyone knows.

Stories, cyphers, secrets and lies;
The young queen walks through her own streets in disguise.
Searching for memories locked in the grave,
Searching for souls that only she can save.
